The book of Revelation helps us see the invisible spiritual world. It gives us a glimpse of what is happening in both the physical world and the spiritual realm. As we study this book, we will learn about future events on Earth, as well as what is happening right now. The letters to the seven churches give us insights into the church throughout history. These letters cover the entire church age.

Two Letters Today: Smyrna and Pergamum

To keep things moving, today we will look at two letters: one to the church in Smyrna and one to the church in Pergamum. These letters teach us important lessons about the church’s struggles and spiritual challenges The Purpose of Revelation for the Seven Churches.

Smyrna: The Beautiful and Prosperous City

The first letter is addressed to the angel of the church in Smyrna. Smyrna was a beautiful city on the coast, located about 40 miles north of Ephesus. It was one of the wealthiest cities in Asia and was proud of its success. The city leaders even called it “the pride of Asia.” Does that remind you of San Francisco?

Smyrna was also known for its hill, called Pagos, behind the city. On top of this hill, several pagan temples were built in a circle. Because the temples formed a crown-like shape, the city was sometimes called “the Crown of Asia.” This is an important detail, which will be mentioned later in the letter Ephesus Guides.
